Racism in America

For the last few weeks while we have been studying the American West, you have seen numerous examples of how people have been treated differently based on the their ethnicity. Racism has been the root of so much violence and tension in American since the inception of our country. We have come a very long way, but racism is still a major problem. It exists everywhere in our society and it will probably never totally disappear.

Take some time and reflect on your thoughts on racism. Here are some points you can address: Why do you think some people are racist? How do you respond to people who are racist? Would you stand up for someone who was being treated poorly because of the color of their skin color or ethnicity? Feel free to share examples, but make sure the language you use is appropriate for school.

I expect a lengthy (15-20 sentence) response. Type in Word first then copy and paste (or highlight and drop and drag) into the response box. You must include at least your first name and last initial in the box for your name.

This can be a very sensitive topic. Make sure you do not write anything that will get you in trouble. You can be open and honest, yet be civil and polite.

  2. Racism is seen from coast to coast generation after generation some kids just wish we were all grey but if you think about it I’m sure society the way it is today would somehow find a way to still put someone else down but to racism can come at some one very different, I’ve been called almost about every name in the book but I don’t blame nobody except my own race because of the actions and there errors gives others that are so call SUPERIOR a reason to call us those names so I shouldn’t take to offense, because there’s always a reason behind why people call you names. What does get to me is when I go to some stores and get treated poorly because I’m darker then the kid next to me, Racism is very big topic people can go on forever about it but what I’ve come to understand is that racism comes either from me being brown or the actions of my own race effecting the opinion about me. Example what happens when you see a white kid come out of a brand new truck of the year automatically you think well that kids parents are making it or just don’t think nothing of it. Now what happens when a brown, or black, kid comes out of that exact same truck it all changes right always society makes you think the worse of that kid and his parents because of where he is from not because of who he is but because of his color. I’m Mexican my dad use to be an illegal alien and now is a U.S. citizen my parents went threw the worst of racism when they arrived to the states because of their color and their clothing. My dad told me one time that if it weren’t for people being racist to him he probably would never have made to where he is now. So to me racism is a state of mind and its all how you handle it when you run into it either you let it put you down or use it as motivation.

  3. my thoughts about racisim?
    1. On a daily basis i find myself watchn tv and out of no where someone is always discriminated, its not always about clolor or creed, but is targeted on more of what a persons personality beholds. I think most people are racist because they are really tryin to point out others faults so they wont have to pay all attention to thier own. There is people who hate, and there is people who get hated on, The world would be in silience if suddenly everybody's problem was fixed. So, in other words people get thier own enjoyment over how they judge people, and how they think they may be better in thier mind's. If everyone thought of themselves all equal, then people wouldnt think of themselves highly, thn people would stop trying to impress everyone else. Racisim: in my mind is considered being very judgemental, no one has the right to...,but like everyone else, i think im better thn the average joe. Being able to fit in with a certain group..gangs,cliques,freaking tribes for christ sakes, makes a person feel secure and cared for. So, when anothr group protest against you, you gotta handle your business right, or you become the one who gets walked on. All theses fall into the role that "racisim" partakes in, without it people wouldnt, or rather couldnt blame eachother's problems on.

  5. For one, I am against racism. I think that we’re all just human beings and we live in the same area. We should just deal with each other no matter what color you are. But many people don’t see it that way, and think that just because your skin color or beliefs are different than it’s a horrible thing. Racism is not a situation happening only in the United States, racism is seen all around the world. Racism now in modern day isn’t necessarily as bad as it was in the past, but there are still some signs of racism. I don’t see how some people are so hateful towards others because of their cultural past. Because I’m a person of color, I guess, I have faced racism myself or racist comments and it’s not the best feeling in the world, but in a way, there’s nothing you can really do about it because if people believe something, they’ll stick to what they believe. I think stereotypes also have a big role in racism, because for almost every race there are many different stereotypes for each. Not necessarily are they always true because EVERYONE is different, yet, we’re all tied together with one thing, and that is being classified as human beings. If everyone could see that I think the whole racism situation would be different and it would be better. Can’t we all just get along people?! (:

  6. I’m totally against racism. There isn’t as much racism these days as there was years ago, but I think there shouldn’t be any at all. It shouldn’t matter who we like, talk to, love, or who we’re friends with by the color of our skin. We are all people and we should treat each other that way no matter what color we are!
I know many people who are racism still this day that have been since they were little. I think how you grow up or just who you are around really makes a difference on how you feel about things. I have people in my family that feel racism is perfectly fine, but I really think it’s because how they we’re raised. They we’re born in like the 1930-1940’s so I think that’s a big reason why they are racist because back then it was still a pretty big deal. I was raised to accept everyone no matter who they are or there color.

When I’m around someone who is racist and they say something racist I’ll either say how I feel about it, or I will just walk away. We all have our opinions so I respect how they feel about things too. But, if I were to witness someone saying something racist to a black, white, Chinese, Mexican, I would definitely feel like I need to tell them it isn’t there place to say anything about their color. We don’t choose to be the color we are, it’s just who we are.

  7. Racism is everywhere around us no matter what. I know people who are racist and yet will hang out with a few colored people. There is a certain degree of racism that some/most people have. Take for instance in wal-mart you see a colored man walking around wal-mart people follow them and leave other customers alone. It’s wrong but that’s the way it goes. I am Native American and yet I have friends who “hate” Mexicans. Yes I do have a strong dislike for a few which then in turn we believe give others bad names but that’s not the case. I am friends with different ethnicities and I don’t hate them but I may dislike a few of them. I think that’s the case is that we confuse racism with simply just not liking a person.
Growing up around racism is the worst excuse ever. If your family is racist don’t you think growing up around that is just a little wrong in today’s society? Racism isn’t a trait that a person inherits and it shouldn’t be a tradition to be proud of period. Being of a different ethnicity is something to be proud of. I am often asked why I hang out with certain people and why I dress the way I dress, simply because that’s the way I grew up. Racism shouldn’t be taught to any child no matter what race.

  8. Racism… from the time it started, to our present time is still a huge issue. In many places, you would see a black guy walking through the streets and then you’d see a gang of white people just beating the crap out of him just for his skin color. Racism is wrong.
If you saw someone being discriminated because of their race or ethnicity, would you stand up for them? It’s rare to see someone sticking up for the person being discriminated. When I lived in Colorado, I was in that situation. I’m friends with plenty of black people, Hispanic people, and all other sorts of races and there were the few white racist friends. One day at school, that white friend went over to one of my black friends and started throwing some hardcore profanities at him. On a side note the “N” word really irritates me. I despise that word. But as soon as he threw out the “N” word, I stepped in and told him to back off. Now I’m not going to go into details, but when you see someone being discriminated, black, white, or any other race or ethnicity, don’t just stand there and watch.
Now if you were racist, could you explain to me why? Like not just “I’m racist because I just don’t like a certain group of people.” But could you really get into detail about it? Me, I’m not racist and never will be. It’s wrong to hate someone because of who they are. They can’t help what skin color they are or what ethnicity they are. It’s just who they are.

  9. Racism is still a big issue in America and around the world. I think people are racist because that’s the way they grew up and mostly likely their parents were like that. Some people are racist because one person from a certain race or religion did something bad. Like with 9/11 most Americans hated Muslims. Just because about 20 bad guys did something horribly wrong. We shouldn’t judge other people because of the bad things that other people have done.
I don’t let racism bother me because I don’t really care what other people think of me. It does bother me when stupid people are racist to other people for no reason, especial y when the other person can’t defend themselves. I saw a show on T.V. one time where they had 2 white guys beat up a Mexican in a busy street. No one stopped it, not even other Mexicans or Latinos that passed by. I would help anyone that was being attacked for no reason.
I don’t understand why people are racist. It just makes them look bad and makes them live an unhappy life. If someone hates or dislikes other persons just because of the way they look or where they came from, how are they going to enjoy life if they are worried about others.

    ReplyDelete
  10. Racism is all over the world, many people are racists. I believe that racism is wrong. I don’t see how you can be racists, there are so many different cultures and races in America alone, that the person you stand next to is a different race and probably believes in a different culture then you do. And I will stand up for anyone who is being treated with disrespect because of the color of their skin or who they believe in, I think that you should treat everyone the same no matter how they dress, if they are gothic, or if they or country men, it don’t matter they are all human beings they have the same organs as you do in your body. Just because they dress different or because their skin is a different color doesn’t mean anything at all. I think people are racists because there are not confident with their self. I think that they see that they are not a good as the other person. The see that person doing something good or achieving at something and it make them jealous and the only way to get back at them is to say mean things to them a disrespect them. On the other hand they could of been raised that way and their parents or family can believe in hating everybody. You see it everywhere you see it on TV and you think it funny but it’s not. I think that people should understand that there is no way you can be racists in this country you might as well just give up you have so many different skin colors and ethnicity. How can you have so much hate for some one that you may not even know? I am Native American and white so are you going to hate me because I have a color in me. You going to talk crap to me and try to bring me down, I don’t think so. I think people that are racists just need to grow up and see the real world and see what kind of people are out there instead of hiding in your little shell protecting yourself from a certain color or culture. You’re just wasting your time because there isn’t away you can. You’re making you self unhappy. I don’t think anybody should be racists.

    ReplyDelete
  11. My thoughts on people who are racists are low people because they are judging somebody because of their skin color and not who that person is deep down. Skin color I think shouldn’t matter so what if your skin color isn’t the same as yours. It’s just skin color why make a big deal about it. None of us can help the fact that we didn’t get to choose our skin color. There is probably a good reason on why we didn’t get that opportunity. I hate the fact that there are people who will dislike somebody because of what kind of skin color somebody else has. I think that being racists is the one of the LOWEST things somebody can be! That gives others around you a good look on how you view and judge life! How do racists expect to make it any were in life? They might as well isolate themselves from everything and everyone! Because people with different skin color ain’t going anywhere just because there are people that don’t like a certain skin color! People who are racists are selfish people! And only give the people like them a chance. It’s a WRONG and NASTY thing to be! But I believe that the way racists people view people on their skin color is the same way that people being judged by view them back!! People who have friends and relatives of all sorts of skin color will make it farther in life with a better attitude and have so much more to look forward in life to then worrying about somebody else’s skin color. We weren’t put on this earth to be racists against one another! But I guess that if racists people want to spend their time hating people because of something nobody can make go away then that’s all on them! I think that there is really no excuse for being racists. Yeah they may have grew up that way because of their parents and their grandparents but I think in my own opinion that they should have tried to rise above all that negativity!! They don’t have to be that way they choose to be that way!! This in my eyes is the sad part…

  12. I think in America these days that racism is a big issue. There are a lot of different races in America and they all are different. Like for example look at the gangs there are some African Americans, “white people” and Mexicans are in gangs and are “bad people” but that doesn’t make them all bad. Another example is Jewish people why do people always pick on them they weren’t the bad people back then it was Hitler.
There is racism all over the world though it just isn’t in America. Muslims for example they in America are watched very carefully just because they are the ones who do the terrorist attacks they all aren’t terrorists. But some people give other people of that race a bad name like Osama bin laden, he gave the Muslim/ middle eastern people a bad name.
The one big topic that I don’t know is really considered racist is the confederate flag. I think that it isn’t racist it was representing the 13 confederate states. But what I don’t get is why African Americans and Mexicans get offended when people fly that flag because it doesn’t represent slavery it represents the history of America. Like when Mexicans fly the Mexican flag in America we don’t get offended.
Another topic in America is our president a lot of people think that because he is black and his name is Obama that he is going to do something wrong. Like some people say that they voted for him just because he is black. But I think that he might have something good to do to the country or he might not. Even though I think racism is a touchy subject most people are scared to talk about it because they don’t want to sound racist.

  13. Racism is everywhere around us no matter what. I know people who are racist and yet will hang out with a few colored people. There is a certain degree of racism that people have. I am friends with different ethnicities and I don’t hate them but I dislike a few of them. Some groups will give their race a bad name than the ones that are not the bad ones have to live with the name that others have gave their ethnic group. Like Mexicans for instance one of my friends is Mexican one of my coworkers is. And yet I get along with them.
I think that people confuse racism with simply just not liking a person not from the skin color or ethnic group but just because they think they are better than other. Like I don’t like rich folk that taunt their money around. Does that make me racist maybe or maybe it’s just because I don’t like the attitude they have. Just because iam a hard working country boy and don’t have stuff handed to me like they did as kids. Racism is seen from coast to coast generation after generation. I’m sure the way society is today we will somehow find a way to still put someone else down. Lots of people are racist I mean look at the president of the United States people absolutely hate him just cause his skin and middle name. But racism can come at anyone weather your white, black Mexican Jewish anything.
People get slammed about their ethnic group and skin color. It’s a fact of life sorry but it is every were you look there will be racism. We as the public can’t stop it. Me iam a little racist I guess but not like some people I mean if I hate a person I have a good reason is what iam trying to say. Like if hated Kirby Cozad and he were black it would have to be because he torques me of somehow. Know if Kirby Cozad was black and was always there for me and helped me I would not hate him. “I like Kirby and he is not black”.

  14. Racism has been a major problem for many years. I don’t think it’s a big of problem as people think it is, but it’s still a problem we all face today. Although we have come very far, and it’s not as bad as it used to be, it’s still bad and I don’t think racism will ever go away. I don’t know why people are racist. I think racist people are ignorant and arrogant. I don’t know where someone got an idea that they were better than someone else for certain reasons, and have a enormous hatred for other people. I don’t really respond to people who are racist, because they have no logic. It just doesn’t make any sense to me why someone would be that way. All people are equal no matter how different they are. We all have a right to live. I would stand up for anyone if they were being treated poorly for any reason.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Well I think racism is wrong because everyone in the world is different in many ways but also we can be the same in a lot of ways to. Just because we are not the same color, believe in the same religion doesn’t mean we are different. We are all humans and we all have feelings, it’s just like how there are certain people who have special needs, they are not the same as all of each and every one of us have something different in life. Like some people who have special needs can’t do a lot of things that we can we they might be able to but it would be harder for them, plus if someone is like that I bet they would want someone to help them out so they can be better in life or do a better job in what they are trying to figure out or do. Like my little god sister is in a wheel chair and most everyone cheats her different just because she can’t walk, but she doesn’t like to be treated differently she wants to be treated like all of us who can walk. And she feels down because they treat her different.
Well when someone is racist you can’t really do much, well you can say some things but that doesn’t mean they will stop being racist it will just make the problem even bigger and worse, like it could even end up in violence. Yeah I would stand up for someone who is being treated poorly because of their skin color and their ethnicity, because like I said we are all humans, we all have feelings, we feel the same thing everyone else feels, and we pretty much do the same thing in life, there are certain people who can do certain things better then someone but that doesn’t mean that they are different. The world is big and there are many places you would want to go and visit but if you are racist it’s not the same, because if you go to another country they might treat you different like you treat everyone else and I bet no one would like that? And plus if we were all the same I think it would be kind of boring, like for me I like to meet new people see how they are, where they came from, what they like to do for fun in their place they lived at, etc.
Like for the people who do the exchange program, how do you think those people would feel if you were racist I don’t think they would like that so much because they came to learn something new that they don’t do in their country, maybe learn a new language, food types, writing methods, sports, etc, and plus we also would learn something new while they are here teaching us, like their language, their types of food what kind of sports they have, how they write in school, etc. That’s why I don’t think racism is right, because we are all different in so many ways, like it could be by the way you speak, the way you would eat, the way you teach your families, the sports you do, the way you dress, etc. That’s why I don’t like when people are racist.

Alexis racist joke really aren’t that bad honestly I think there the funniest because they take our true own mistakes and turn them into jokes now if they were made then it would be a problem racism is just how you look at it I mean I’m sure we get mad but for what ? Imagine how low that person has to go to be racist or make racial comment about you just goes to show you that people out there will do whatever it takes to put you down so they feel better about themselves.

  17. Racism is horible and dumb, you shouldn’t be judged on the color of your skin. We have racism everywere we go today its all around us. I been ariund some racist people and all they do is talk crap and say how they hate mexicans or affrican americans. I do not like to be around those people when they are doing that. I will never do that cause its wrong my grandpa was like nthat caus ehe was around that time when that was all going on. I think it is good we have a black president that should we can deal with it all around one day in the future everybody willl get along and be friends and no enemys. That’s what I think atleast and I hope it will be thaty way soon.

  18. Racism is the lowest and crudely way of putting people down. It’s a strong and heartless point towards someone’s characteristics that make that person who are they are today. I’m not really sure why racism occurs every day in the United States but surely it’s not a fair game to the others that don’t believe people should hang with their own kind. Common sense will tell you that were all equal except with different skin color. I am against racism; I don’t think its right. No matter what no one should have to judged for any mysterious reason. I also believe that all racism is seeded in fear and in hatred passed down from generation to generation. So in other words I feel that racism is primarily taught by parents who are racist. So, how we are as a society suppose to accomplish the task of ridding ourselves of this horribly divisive thing called racism? I believe a great deal of time and effort. If not, possibly several generations of time. This is a serious problem and who knows what this could lead to. I’ve been judged before and it wasn’t a really good feeling. Even though it was said out of anger, I forgive the man for saying it to my face. If America wanted to make this country a better place to be in, I would suggest that it should start with racism first because absolutely no one should be judged for the color of there skin.

  19. @ joe Moore....

Joe I pay my respects to you no one racist would of probably of never said something like that about them self’s. Really you’re racist? So what’s so great about your color then anyone else’s can you fly or something. So your one of the kind of kids that put other down to feel good about yourself? I always wanted to know so what’s the point of racism what’s the point of putting your color over anyone else’s? What is it in other colors that you hate so much? the walk, think, breath, sleep, the same as you now if they had four arms and ten legs and purple then I would see where your coming from, but honestly can you tell me why being racist is so enjoyable? I mean I honestly could care less if people like you judged me by my skin, want to know why? Because its people like you in this world that give me a reason to do better and actually become something in my life then sit here and waste my time judging people by their color or judging them because where you live is not where they live or the clothes you were aren’t what he wares, or the way you talk isn’t the way he talks, you honestly have time for all that??

    ReplyDelete
  20. I’m totally against racism. It’s not as bad as it used to be but like Beth said it probably won’t ever go away. I think Obama being elected shows how much we’ve overcame racism so far. People are created equal no matter what the color of their skin is. I’d most definitely stick up for somebody if they were being treated poorly because of racism. I haven’t really had to deal with it before but I’ve heard people say harsh remarks about the different colors of others. I especially frown upon racist jokes. I’m not sure how people can be so hateful. I don’t think people really understand how hurtful they can be with their words and actions when they discriminate others. If you don’t have anything good to say then don’t say it at all. Haven’t we been taught that ever since we were children? Why haven’t we applied it? We need to accept people for who they are no matter what they look like. I think they’re inappropriate and unnecessary. Racism is absolutely a problem. It occurs frequently and it’s not right. I think it has a lot to do with power and how people think they’re better than others. Who you truly are has nothing to do with what you look like. We need to stop being so judgmental and learn some manners. People should strive to love each other and not hate on each other.

  23. I think racism is still a big issue everywhere even here in scottsbluff but it has decreased alot in time.some people think that racism is because how they are raised and what they grew up around which could be true but not a reason to keep racism going in the family. Some people say its because of there perspective on people they see and then they automatically think everyone of that race is like that.rasism i think is always going to be in our lives but if we can stop the cycle then we could decrease it.my opinion on rasist people is that i really dont care if somone dont like me because of my race,it really dont effect me.

  24. Racism is bad for anyone weather your Caucasian, Hispanic and African American. But racism is not just about what you are now these days it’s about who you are, where you’re from, and what you look like. People who choose to be racist don’t see who it affects not only the people they are racist to but themselves. The government has tried to fix so much of this problem but I see that it won’t end. When you are racist it will cause just hate toward yourself, or even maybe some thinking you’re in dumb and I wouldn’t want someone to see me in those ways. Also now you do have to watch what you do or put on the internet. By my experience I have one of the best jobs in Scottsbluff they actually searched me on the web, and didn’t scare me because I don’t have nothing to hide. Also someone having this belief will probably won’t have a very good job or not even have a job at all, my advice to you is, you better be thinking about having your own business because no one will hire you unless they have the same belief as you. Be careful who you don’t like because they could end up saving you’re life one day.

  25. Racism is a big problem everywhere and anywhere we go now days. I think people are racist because maybe it was the way they were raised as a child, or the way people’s parents or grandparents are. If someone is racist toward me I get mad and start talking back to them or maybe more. But if someone is racist to a friend or a family member I still do the same. Because I don’t think people need to be that way, and I don’t even know why their like that. There are many times that people have been racist to me. Like if I go into a store sometimes the people that work there follow me around asking if I need any help, and even after I tell them I’m just looking around they still follow me everywhere. And keep following me till I leave the store, it gets on my nerves but that’s just how some people are. Also when I worked at wal-mart there were some incidents where people were racist to me while I was working. Like when I’m suppose to help a customer with their groceries I would, but they wouldn’t be so nice to me and even ask if there was somebody else to help them with their groceries but I just told them that they were stuck with me. So when they were leaving I would tell them to have a great day, with a smirk on my face even though I was mad. And one day my ride didn’t pick me up from work and I had to walk and on the way people were driving uptown because it was a Friday night, and some guys in a truck started yelling at me calling me a beaner and chased me in there truck. But I got away and I had some pleasant words for them when they went by me again. But these are just some racist times I’ve had to deal with, but I don’t think anyone should have to go through that. But there is no stopping it because racism is everywhere.

  26. I think that some people are racist is because they are selfish and think that if you are not white you’re not right, but that is not true because these days no one is full blooded, and I think that some of the people are racist is because there family is.
I don’t respond that well to people that are racist because I had to grow up in a house hold that was filled will a lot of racist people and most of them were just out of the military and I don’t think it is right because it isn’t there fault they are that color. I would stick up for some who was getting picked on because of the color of their skin or their ethnicity; I have had to stick up for someone because they were black, because one of my cousins is really racist. One time some black guy asked her to dance and she told him heck no I don’t dance with black people but she said the “n” word and I told her she can’t talk that way around me or she can go back home to Denver, and my dad is really racist ever cense he got out of the army he will not date any one black, he might be nice to their face but he would never ever date some one black, brown, and other color then his own, even if he likes a white girl as he call them is she had a different color child he will dump her right away.

  29. Racism in America is bad. Im black and live in Nebraska that sucks. I really don’t care for this assignment so if I get a bad grade I don’t really care. Its not my fault I should have to educate ignorant people so my opinion doesn’t really matter.

  30. Racism is a very real part of American History (not to mention World History). By ignoring it, we ignore a real part of human nature. The reality is we can either address it an learn from it, or dwell in the past and allow it to consume us. It is all about the power to choose our own futures. I think many of your comments are great and thought provoking. Great discussion by many of you.

  31. After reading more posts, is it really about racism or discrimination? If it is about name calling, feeling superior/inferior, treating people with dignity or without, aren't we talking about more than just one's skin color? Just think about the laws....cannot discriminate based on one's race, (note race is only one piece of the law), familial status, handicap, etc... It all comes to treating all people as you wish to be treated... The Golden Rule!

  32. My thought’s on racism are in my opinion I believe it’s okay if that’s how you were brought up I was brought up around racism and I am racist I don’t see anything wrong with it everyone has there beliefs and there is not oe thing wrong with being who you are. And where I was born and raised for a while in Elba,Alabama its all around and it’s never going anywhere no matter what you do and it’s not that I find every other color bad it’s just I prefer to be around my color for example one reason I dislike other colors are the people that walk around acting like “Gang bangers” there are no gang’s this is scottsbluff Nebraska there aren’t gangs and I guess if that’s who you are great that’s fine with me I choose not to be around them I like the way I live my life and all my friends are the same color and have the same belief’s it’s not so much that I hate every other color there are a few other colored people I’ll talk too but I do not hang out withnthem and its rare I talk to them. I don’t care if people like the fact that I am but it’s not the fact that I hate them just I really do not care for them and I’ll never change that about me I was born racist and I’m sure I’ll die that way too I’m not saying whites work harder or anything but sometimes it does happen it’s your belifs if you believe in it or not just so happens I do and I’m fine wih it.

I agree with you, I wish we were all just grey someday!! but then, that'll cause another problem because if we're all grey different people would try to find a way to make their "grey-ness" look better! It's just how some people think, everyone no matter what color they are, are always going to be DIFFERENT! We're ALL unique! &_I personally don't think that's a bad thing.

    @Heather G
I also agree with you because really, you're right it shouldn't matter how we look, WE ARE ALL HUMAN BEINGS!! &_you said that you will stand up for anyone who is being treated with disrespect because of the color of their skin or who they believe in,well my thoughts, I will stand with you to help! If racism ended there probably would be wayyyy less problems in the world!

  36. Racism has always been around no matter where you’re from some people only see it as just one group only being targeted but really its everyone you could be the most successful person ever and still be discriminated . Racism can come in many forms from economy all the way through color of skin I have seen so much racism in my life that it’s just a normal thing to me now it’s going to happen so how can we change it. The thing is you can’t change it unless people want to learn. I see racism as uneducated people partaking in bulling someone else for their differences. It’s funny when so many adults of this country agree that teenagers should act more grown up and responsible when the adults that are making the allegations that just because you’re a different ethnic your suddenly fall into that stereo type of that race of people, people that so happen to be your race. Really those adults don’t grow up themselves and also don’t take responsibility for making poor choices and justifying it to be so ignorant. . Well don’t get me wrong its not only adults that do it. Children all the way to teen discriminate mainly learning from their parents they learn to hate what their parents do. Its only natural to them they stick to what they were taught safe to stay Away from certain people because only their people are safe One of the times I was discriminated was when I was working at wal-mart a customer had walked up to me and said hola and I replied I do speak English and they completely ignored it. They continued and very inappropriately said que es the pricia on this pesco(fish) . It made me so angry because it made me feel like they thought i was too stupid to know how to speak English. After I helped them they muttered as they walked off we don’t need any more stupid spics working in wal-mart. Really I was shocked that was the first time I was ever discriminated it bothered me so much I asked to be taken off the register at that moment. I need time to cool down and not let that get to me. The people that discriminate against other people rarely know how much impact they have on that person. In the news everyone always hears of how a teenager turned to suicide because of their school life was too painful to live another day to deal with it because someone is always picking on them (discrimination). Really I just think anything that has to do with racism is wrong because it’s just justifying discrimination .

  37. I'm gonna begin by telling you a little bit of my thoughts on racism in America. Racism is a belief that one race is superior to all others .I do in my mind believe that some people are racist but I’m not quite sure why they are or do function how they do. I believe that no one’s really been quite able to figure them out. I don’t believe in racism nobody should be judged by the sexism, age, color of their skin, or they way the look or act nobody should be judged at all we are all unique and different in our own little ways whether it be the color of our skin or anything else for that matter. If I seen someone being treated different or poorly because of the color of their skin I would stand up for them but I would hope that they would have enough self confidence to stand up for themselves. My thought is that we don’t hate someone for the color of their skin I don’t believe we hate people at all for that matter of fact. I believe we envy what some people might have. Racism is ignorance and will probably never go away and no one will ever be able to change the way we all treat one another even if racism did stop people would just find other ways to put each other down. That’s just the type of world that we are living in today hopefully in time it will get better but no one can change ones opinion on how they feel about a significant other.

  38. Racism has been around for many years. We are starting to overcome it, if we werent, Obama either would already have been shot or he would have never been elected. There are still many hate groups today, but it isnt no where as bad as it was hundreds of years ago. I think many of the people who are racist today were raised that way. Generations before them were racist and they passed those feelings down to their children and grandchild.
I don’t think its right. I don’t see why it would matter what your skin color is or what country you come from. I have friends that are black, hispanic, asian and they are some of the coolest people I know. It doesn’t bother me if a person is racist, as long as they don’t disrespect the people around me. I don’t care what a person believes or how they were raised, as long as they are respectful when they are around me. I have had to step in a few times at a school I used to go to because people were being very disrespectful to a couple of my friends because they were Asian. It was their choice to do what they did, and I took it as my responsibility to step in and stop it.
Peope get discriminated against for many things like their race, gender, sexual orientation, and religion. Its not going to end over night, it might never end. It is going to get better. I don’t think that there is any way to stop it, that would be like trying to tell someone that they cant be a certain religion, or that they cant dress the way they do and they have to change everything about them. Even if everyone was the same color, acted the same way, and dressed the same way there would still be people that would find things to discriminate against something.

I think you have a really good point with the 9/11 thing. I agree when you say that people turned against the muslims just because of a few bad people. It seems like people will listen to everything that’s bad about someone or something but they never listen to the good. Do you think that it is one of the reason that we keep getting into wars? What about with cliques in high school, it is kinda the same concept, I think because in the bigger schools everyone has their own little cliques and people tend to listen to what every says about certain people. Do you think that that kind of attitude in high school follows people when they graduate and move on?

  40. To me racism is very stupid. Nobody should be judge on the color of their skin or how they live. Just because it is different doesn’t mean it’s wrong. I have been through a racist encounter plenty of times. When I was just 12 years old I had a grown woman call me a dirty Mexican. Now for a grown woman to degrade a 12 year old like that is immature and I’m not even full Mexican. Just half of a different race was enough to set her big mouth off. It is way low and degrading to think that your race is better than all other races or just a certain race.

I really don't think that anybody has room to discriminate somebody because of their race because a black person could have the potential of being smarter than Albert Einstein. Simply because that black person has a brain. All brains work the same. The mentality is different but the functions and operations are still the same. So why would you say an Indian isn't worth as much as a black person just because he is Indian. Unfortunately though, racism is everywhere we go. There will always be some ignorant person who think they are too high of class just because of their race. You don't have class because of the color of the skin, you have class because of your intelligence. Everybody is equal in importance and different on everything else. That is what the world needs to have in mind. They don't need to worry about where you are from, what color you are, or anything like that.

really how could being racism be ok?? its the worst thing you could probably do to a person becuase no one deserves that kind of treatment. . . and ifu were brought up like that isnt it just like how those gang bangers were brought up to do what proably what their own families were in. becuase u saying that u hate them is like hating your self becuase u say its ok for u to hate them becuase it is your belief right well thats there's to be strong and protect their territory. . . really i just dont see the point in it and everyone is the same we all walk the same breath the same . no ones race is better than any one elses, and really its very hypocritical to be judging people on their difference when their is some many differences within your own race. well not only your own race everyones race. So i ask you how could you be racist. . . ??

  45. Racism……is a very big issue in the United States. It sometimes plays a role in whether you get a job, a house and how you get treated. Some ethnic groups think that they are superior than others. You can also get discriminated against of how you dress cause that has happened to me. Cause I know I dress funky but that s me. And don’t really care what peo ple think but other people care of how they get viewed. And I think that happens just as much as any other a issue. Other kids bash each other if they are different and its not right. If your not a rich tight ##% then people don’t like you. Kids with gay parents have it bad too. Just because their parents are gay does that mean they derserve to be picked on? No not really. Cause I have a family member that is gay and I don’t see anything wrong with it. As long as they are happy why would you care what sex it is with? And I have personally been friends with people who are bi or gay. And they are just as normal as everyone else. Basically I think that if you are really popular and people find out that you are bi especially if you’re a guy your social status would change. Another major thing is people who are fat get picked on. And I will admit I do to it too. But some people cannot help it cause it just their bone structure or genetics. But the but the people who are the size of a cow I think can help it a little buit. It is wrong on my part and the other people who pick on the people that are fat but if you can help not being that big and doesn’t have to do with your bone structure or anything, In my opinion you are just asking to get picked on, cause that just shows how much self respect you have for your self. And if you don’t respect your self then why should other people. And its gross if you are like 500 300 pounds. So once again the people who cant help it are fine but the people who can you should go on a diet to make your life easier.

  47. @Brenda I think if somebody is racist then they discriminate against that race. So, it all kind of goes together all at once. I also know that just because it is the law to not be racist but I have had an application be turned down because I was half Mexican. I know this because I know his daughter and little does he know, we tend to tell each other things. Now I can't sue him or anything because I have no hard evidence and I would never expect his own daughter to testify against him.

  52. Racism is a thing that comes into most peoples thoughts at least once a day. In all situations people think racism is a bad thing. Racism is in everybody no matter if you want to admit it to it or not it’s in me and it’s in you. Some people can’t help being racist that’s the way they were raised like myself I come from a very very racial Irish family so I do have a lot of racism in me but for good reason. My family has been put into situations with certain groups that have made us out to hate them. Over the years the younger generations in my family have figured out that there are some that you can trust and they turn out to be ok people. But I will never take their side over one of my own kind. There are a lot of things with racism I believe in like for example certain groups I do not trust and will never like and there are some groups I will give chances to. Another thing that has been taught to me since I was a little kid is that inter breeding different colors is a huge no no do with them as you wish but no marriage no kids. You can look at racism and say whatever you want about it and claim you’re not racist but one day you will be put into a situation by a certain group and let’s see how you feel about them after that. There is nothing wrong with racism its human nature and it protects you from the certain people that do not get along with what you are.

  67. My opinion on this whole racism thing, I say it’s a bunch of ridiculous immature craziness. I mean I have a boyfriend who seriously dislikes African Americans, he makes cruel and harsh comments about them whenever we happen to walk or even drive somewhere and they are there, but when he does this I get extremely upset and I tell him that he is being really rude and to seriously grow up, because Me I grew up around nothing but Blacks, Mexicans, Asians, and Caucasians. I have nothing at all against any of them. I even have brothers that are of different races, African American at that and he is aware of them. I just see that when people who make racial comments to others of other races I see that they just judge them by what their color is. I’ve heard many saying that the color black is a devil color. Racism is not a huge thing to me, if someone doesn’t like me for the way I am then, oh well, I don’t really care. I see us all as the same people just different actions. It’s great for people to say how they feel and not keep it in but now these days they say them in a crucial and in a racist way and part of the time they don’t even know these people and they are discriminating them. Racism again to me is just a bunch of ridiculous immature craziness, and means nothing to me.

In your eyes does the skin color of someone make the person, or is their personality...last time I checked it sure wasn't because their color. We all have things in common whether anyone likes it or not. We are all humans, we all walk, talk, breathe, eat, sleep. Are you not going to be friends with people that dont have the same hair color, eye color, same height, religion or doesnt like the same food as you just because there different? I highly doubt it, if that was the case you would be one very lonely guy..

If speaking a different language in America is so bad, how come in some jobs I would get paid more than you, because I speak Spanish. Being mean to a fat person is not being racist ok. Racism is a huge factor in this world that will never go away in time, because there is always going to be people that think they are better or just hate another group of people. And just because of some wrong things a couple of people have done, they have to go and ruin it all for the people of the same race. I don’t see how people can see someone on the streets that looks like/ or resembles something of what they don’t like and they right away make a point of there discuss. Because first of all that person hasn’t done a thing to them to make them angry at him or here. If people could not like a person because they did something wrong to them that Is under stainable, but only be mad at that one person not the hole race that they come from. There are even people out there that dislike other people just because that’s how they grew up. They were just around older family members that showed them that not liking a group of people is there way of life. So now there are people out there that dislike people for really no reason that they can really explain but there evil or bad. When it comes to me I don’t look at my self as a racism person I just don’t like people that do me wrong in anyway.

  75. @ laura b. I agree. I think that racism shouldn't be permitted...no matter the color, the weight, someone's sexual orientation shouldn't be expectable. We should all take into considerations that were only human....and racism comments should be allowed. One thing that really bothers me is when someone makes fun of their appearance. The reason why that bothers me is because we have no control over how we look we just have to live with the body that we get.
