Michael Jordan on Failure

Watch this short video and listen very carefully to what Michael Jordan has to say. After you watch it take a few moments to reflect on some of the times in your life when you have failed then write a response to these questions:
1. How do you define success?
2. How do you define failure?
3. Describe one time in your life when you failed.
4. What did you learn from this failure? How did you use it to help you become more successful?

  1. I define success as either someone failing at what they were trying to do but still continuing on trying to do it; or someone trying to do something and accomplishing it.

I would define failure as when some one tries once or a hundred times, they don’t accomplish it, and they give up on what they are doing.

I had failed when I decided to drop out of school a few years ago. I just didn’t want to go and do any thing. I didn’t want to deal with the people there and I didn’t want to do the work. I spent that school year running around and doing stupid things. That’s when I noticed how hoard people have it when they don’t have an education. I noticed that those people were working for minimum wage and was hardly making enough to survive on. That’s when I decided to go back. I went back to Minatare last year and got into VALTS.

  2. I define success with two words (KEEP TRYING). But I define Failure With one Word (QUIT). I know this because My last year of school I turned out to be four months pregnant and wanted to quit school and get a job and later found out I was in a bad condition and had to be bed rest. And while I was laying down for the rest of my pregnancy I thought to my self what kind of life would my son if I don’t graduate and get a good job to give my son what he needs and wants. Now in the days we need a diploma to get a decent job now. Now I think my failure of getting pregnant just made me stronger to finish school and be a better person for myself.

  3. Success is when you complete your goal/objective.

Failure is when you don’t complete your goal/objective.

A few months back, I had to take a UA for my probation officer. When I took it, I failed and got a 4 p.m. curfew.

Well, it really sucks knowing that I failed something that I could’ve easily succeeded at. So now instead of failing every time I go, I succeed.

  4. 1. I think success is something you learn over the years you just can not think success is going to come to you by being a great person some one with a lot of money. It takes time to succeed and it takes failure to learn success

    2. Failure is something that happens to every one not just one person if it only happened to one person we would have nothing every one has to fail. If you don’t fail once you cant succeed in what your doing

    3. I failed many times during vocabulary tests, and I wasn’t getting better. I tried almost everything to remember the words but, I couldn’t

    4. After awhile I started going home and practicing I had my sister read the words and I would spell them out. When I learned the words I started to get better and got hundreds on my tests.

  5. Success to me is when you get where or what you want in life after working your hardest for it even after you fail many times. On the other hand, failure is when you work for what you want but you don’t put enough effort into it. In my life I have failed to graduate on time when I was suppose to in May of 2009. Although I have failed I am still in school working to get my diploma and I have learned from my failure that I need a diploma to get anywhere in life. Failing is the thing that keeps me going everyday and I won’t stop until I succeed.

  6. I have failed at graduating with my class of 2009. It was hard to watch the people I’ve grown up with and cared so much about walk across that stage and receive their diplomas while I am still fighting to receive mine. I learned from this failure though, I learned that you can’t just coast in life you have to work hard in everything you do to be the successful person you would want to be. I am now in VALTS, but had the chance to go back to the high school and relive football and friends, but I chose to get my diploma and move on with my life by making myself a successful person in the workforce.

  7. I define success as completing your goals the way you want to no matter how y times you try.
I define failure as giving up on everything that is worked for that could mean so much later on in the future.
I have failed many times and many things but the one that had me down was when I quit school for no reason and had everything going great for me then when I left it all went down hill.
I learned that quitting for no reason can cost so many successful features that I could have had many successful things going for me, I used this to help me to try again at completing school so that I can have a more successful future for myself.

  8. Success to me is when you really want to achieve something and even if you don’t get it the first time you try again and again until you get it. Failure to me is quitting something you want. I felt that I failed when I got pregnant when I was 16. I let down my family and myself. Now that I look at my situation back than, the good thing I got out of getting pregnant at 16 is that I have a wonderful son. That if it wasn’t because of him I wouldn’t be here today. I would have been in a really bad place or with the wrong people. My son has made me into a better person, now I want to be successful and do better for him and me.

  9. In my mind failure is when no one believes in you and puts you down enough to make you successful with what you are going through.
I have failed my whole life in one person’s eyes. This person has to be my father and my whole life I have grown up being a failure to him. He told me I would never graduate from school; he also told me I wouldn’t be able to make it on my own. The day I moved out he was upset because he figured I would spend all my money on alcohol and drugs like I did when I was a kid, and he thought that he would be burying me after I moved out. If it wasn’t for my dad thinking I couldn’t make it in the world I honestly don’t think I would be here today. I almost dropped out of school and he always told me I wouldn’t be able to graduate and that is the main reason I am still in school and about to graduate. Now I know when I do graduate and go to college he will be proud and it will allow me to be successful with my career and mostly with my life.

  10. I started riding bulls when I was about ten years old. I got plowed into the ground and plowed into the ground. finally I have gotten better at it and I have covered more bulls all because I have never gave up on anything in my life and that is what has made me the person I am today. Never say never or say I cannot do it. Keep digging for what you want. That’s how I got were I am today with bulls and everything else in life. Like high school I wanted to quite and just work for the rest of my but people reminded me that I am not a quitter and look know I am a senior in high school my last year cause I never gave up and none of my teachers or family members gave up on me either. Nerve give up keep going hold your head up high and keep going.

  11. 1.What I think success is that when you really want something in life you’ll get it even if it takes a long time to get but after all you’ll have what you have been waiting for in life.

    2. I think failure is when you don’t get any where in life and you do things to ruin your life instead of improving in it.

    3. when I was younger I was about in 6th grade I moved to Texas and I was suppose to start school but I never went to it cause I didn’t want to go to school any more I hated it so much that for six months I didn’t go but that’s when I lived with my aunt. I told my mom that I wanted to move back here to Gering to go to school with my friends and I came like a month before school ended and I did everything I could’ve done to pass to 7th grade I did . I didn’t really like to go to school while I went to the high school because there was to much drama and to much stress but I wanted to drop out of school and just work, but when they told me I had a chance to graduate if I came to VALTS so I took the chance and now I love coming to school there is no drama here and you meet new people and I’ll graduate when I have to and I like here cause the teachers are very helpful whenever you need help, plus our principal is awesome to you can count on him anything and he tries to help you out to get to your goal 

    4. What I learned from my mistake was that what if I didn’t finish school where would I be in life? I want to have a good career for my kids when I have my own family. I want the best for them like my parents want the best for me and my brothers because like tell us the best is for you guys not for us, we won’t always be here even though we would love to be here for you guy’s all your lives. So that’s why I want to graduate and I want to get some where in life because my parents worked hard for my brothers and I, and for us to give its not a good decision to make in life if they gave everything you to have a great future. 

  12. I define success as something that’s not a failure, something one achieves.

I define failure as something that’s not a success, something one does not achieve.

I’ve failed at school, before I came to valts regular school was a very big struggle for me inside and out. It seemed no matter how hard I tried to be better in school with keeping up my grades not missing school and not being late it always went the other way towards failure. I was always misunderstood in the class room. I could never keep up with the other kids; simple things to them were challenges for me. I started to give up I hated school it didn’t seem fair why did I have to fail? I started to miss a lot more school, not turning in my school work I just didn’t care anymore. I thought why I should keep trying when in the end it’s never right or good enough. I felt like a huge failure like I failed life.

I’ve learned from my failure by coming here to valts I heard about valts so I went for it I enrolled my self into valts I gave it a shot. I needed to get away from regular school I needed people and a place that could understand me and my struggles. And that’s what I found at valts. I love coming to school now, I understand things and when I don’t there are the great teachers at valts who will sit down one on one with me to understand. It saved me from dropping out of school. It changed my life 100 percent. My grades use to be d’s and f’s but now there A’s and B’s. It’s the best feeling in the world to know that I can be good in school and not have to struggle along the way.

  13. 1. I define success as achieving your dreams and goals.
    2. I define failure as not achieving, giving up and quitting on your dreams.

    3. I failed as a role model. I have a little sister, and she looks up to me for a lot of things. For a long time I made a lot of bad decisions, like lying and doing bad things. One night I made one of the worst decisions in my life, and my little sister knew about it. I knew I had disappointed her and let her down. The next day I apologized to her and I realized how I had messed up and how she looked up to me to do the right thing.

    4. I learned from my mistake and it helped me be more successful because now I know I have to do my best and stay out of trouble to be a good person and also to be a good role model for my little sister.

  14. I have failed in life. I gave up on school because I wasn’t getting the work nor going to school. I hated everything about it. I would never be at school on time. If I was a minute late for class I wouldn’t go at all. I just wouldn’t go to school. The work I did not understand it. I was always to shy to ask questions in class, I thought people would think I was stupid. The teachers seemed like they had to hurry and teach you everything that you need to know and send you on your way. Very seldom you would have any connection with your teacher. They always seem like they were in a rush when you would ask for help on your work. When you would asked to many questions they would get frustrated with you. They want students to listen to them but it works the other way around to. You got to give respect before you receive it. My parents talked me in to coming to VALTS. We agreed on some stuff and the next day I started here. And it has been a big success in my life I love school. I love the teachers, they explain and help you with the work, the respect you for who you are. Thanks to my parents, Kirk, and the wonderful teachers, I wouldn’t be here right now!

  15. I define success as someone that fails but does not quit trying. I define failure as someone that fails and just quits. One time I failed in my life is when my little brother was drowning at the Gering swimming pool and could not lift him out of the water so I got a lifeguard. From this failure I learned that when it comes to family there is nothing I won’t do. I used this to become more successful when my brother was drowning a second time in a swimming pool in someone’s backyard and saved him.

  16. 1. Success, to me, is the achieving of one’s dreams or goals through hard work, determination, and perseverance.
    2. Failing to achieve one’s goals, I believe, is when a person gives up on themselves and doesn’t aspire to better themselves.
    3. I have failed many times in my life; the most prominent being when I committed a crime against another and went to the pokey.
    4. I learned that one can mess up in life only so many times before it comes back to bite you in the pooper.

  17. I define success as completing a goal that you wanted to complete for a long time. Failure, is not completing something that you wanted to get done or needed to be done. There were plenty of times I failed. Nothing to serious. That I know of. I try really hard to prevent from failing to pay my car payments. Making a car payment is really important to me. If I failed making a car payment, I would feel like a failure. I will succeed paying off my car.

  18. I think success is when you do something right that you been trying and trying to do right. It is also when you feel great for doing it right and not wrong. Failure is some thing most people do not like failure is when you do something wrong and you keep doing it. It is also when you let a lot or a few people down. I have failed in life at many thing one thing I failed at was not coming home that one night when my dad wanted me to then the next mourning I get a phone call he is in the hospital and he died that next mourning that one thing I failed at. What I learned from this failure always listen to your parents and spend some time with them.

  19. Success in my opinion is doing something you enjoy whether you’re good at it or not. Finding happiness in everything you do.

I believe failure teaches us to never give up. Of course some things do not work out as always planned. But life goes on. We learn from the decisions we make.

One of my failures I’ve had is not being as responsible as I should be. I’m working very hard at changing that thought. I’ve learned to never give up.

  20. The meaning of success to me means when I finish something that I have started, and still working on it to help me improve on it more. Failure to me means when you just give up on what you’re trying to do, without continuing it. One thing in my life that I feel I failed at is boxing because I use to be real bad at it when I started. Then after a year I quite because of certain reason and I know if I would have stayed in it I would have been real good. Just because something changed doesn’t mean I have to stop what I like doing.

  21. Success to me is when in the end u accomplished what matters most to you, and failure to me is when you go home at the end of the day unsatisfied and wondering what you could of dun different. One of the things I failed at in my life is being the person I know I could have been, I use to party and do things I wasn’t suppose to be doing, and now my health is going down the drain and before I’m even 20 I will have had 3 surgeries.
I had to learn the hared way from my failure, I learned that I don’t need to do every think that my friends do and my success from it all is that I can make my family happy and not disappointed in me and I can finish school.

  22. Success is when you have achieved something that you didn’t think you were able to do. Even if you tried a million times and failed a million more. Failing is when you have hit a hard spot and don’t know how to get around it yet. Kind of like a video game. When you die, you get another life to try and succeed. I have failed in my life many times. The first time I tried riding my bike; I fell into the street and fractured my arm. Even though my arm was fractured and in great pain, I still wanted to learn how to ride my bike. So, I made my brother help me the whole entire night until I was able to 5 feet by myself. Failing to ride my bike helped me get more motivated to learn how to and it showed me that in life everything is going to be a challlange.

  23. To me success is what others see you have achieved when u are superior to what they have or own but reality to me inside there is no success, achieving success is a never ending process because there is always better then what you have and the only way to achieve better then the best is to keep going, and succeed at being successful.
Failure is what happens when one is not in there rite state of mind at the exact second they are leading to failure, failure is a way to test our mentality to see if you are capable of learning that failure leads to success only if you are willing to take your mistakes from before and perfect what you have failed at. I failed at being who I should and could be in life I skipped class I ignored my parents, I was lazy, I was out of control till I got in big trouble with the law I was put in the detention center for a period of time, no family, no freedom, no life, after all that passed I returned to school but because of how much I missed I wasn’t going to graduate when I was suppose to then I attended VALTS I learned to try and be the best I can be to succeed

  24. I can’t remember anything that I have given up on realy but there is one thing that I could of given up on but didn’t, and that is working with horses. I kept getting it wrong and getting it wrong. And I got so mad at myself cause my teacher kept telling the same thing and I’m surprised that she didn’t get flustered with me. But eventually I was getting it right. And then we moved on to more advanced things and I got that right also. Because you have to teach yourself before you can teach your horse. And I am very glad that I did not give up because I would not have the horse I have nor the experience and the joy of working with her.

  25. In my life I have failed many times. But in my opinion you only fail if you quite. When I was eight I joined a shoot club and we had competitions I shoot the worst that first year a 14 out of 100. The next I decided to try again. I shoot a 97 out of 100 the highest anyone in the club had ever shoot before. So I failed the first year but did great the second year.

  26. I failed at graduating on time that was a major failure in my family I get reminded almost daily that I did not graduate on time. Its one failure that im pretty sure has taught me the most. Listening to your parents on what to do and watching your positive influences in your life are what I should have done but I didn’t. Now im taking over classes I have already done sitting in school wasting time when I could be working and starting a proper adult life but it’s the life learning lesson im looking for the I failed and now this what I have to do to fix it. I believe when you fail your consequences should be severe it will teach you to do what’s right with out any error in fear of what will happen. Failure is something your going to deal with in life no one is perfect but it’s up to you on what you learn from failure and how well you fix it that is what determines just how successful of person you have the capabilities of being.

  27. Success in my opinion is when you fail many times and get up and try it again until u accomplish your dream or goal.

Failure to me is when you’re trying your hardest but just can’t overcome the problem and give up.

I have failed many of times in my life and that is probably why I am the way I am today. I have failed to get my diploma on time and also failed in life at some points but still I get up and keep my faith and try my hardest everyday to succeed.

Failing at things in life also helped me learn how to succeed in life. I use my experiences in failing to remind me not to give up until I succeed.

  28. I define success as doing what pleases you and going through with that idea.

My definition of failure is giving up, and not trying hard enough to succeed in what you believe.

I’ve failed a few times in my life just like everybody else. I’m only human and I’m not perfect but one of my failures would have to be just giving up on everything. My sophomore year was a rough time full of drama. I use to be an athletic girl. Softball and basketball was my favorite, but as soon as I hit high school it was like everything had changed and being social and being apart of the high school drama was more important than school and sports. I had given up. Drama got the best of me and I just quit everything, no more friends, no sports, and I had always skipped school. I wanted to quit everything and drop out of school. Then I realized that I’m much better than that. Drama got out of the way, I want to play sports again, and I’m still in school and actually doing much better. My failure became a success once I started trying.

  29. The first time I really ever failed in my life is when I failed my freshmen year. I never went to class would party every weekend and get away with what ever I could. I grades immediately went straight down. At the end of the year the counselor brought me into her office and told me I would be considered a freshman again next. It was suppose to be my sophomore year that I never got. Well after that I said I would keep trying hard and make it to my junior year well that didn’t happen I barley made it to sophomore. I got so scared of the future of having to graduate with my sister. Having to see my class graduate with out me. So I tried my options so I decided to try to get into VALTS a better move for me but my mom didn’t think so. She argued with me because she thought it was like dropping out it was completely different. It helped a lot because it was a smaller classroom setting which helped me stay focused and on task. I liked it because we were all treated like adults and made a better environment for learning . and today I am graduating on time with my class I am still 10 credits off but valtz have provided classes that will able me to graduate with my class. Class of 2010!

  30. I define success as if you succeed a goal that you had set for yourself or if you had succeeded at anything.

I define failure as if you didn’t succeed at anything that you tried accomplishing or just not accomplishing anything at all.

My biggest failure was when I flunked freshman year and I had to repeat it. I learned that all I had to do was do my work and go to school and listen also. If I would have just done those things I would be successful right now and be in the right grade that I am suppose to be in. I also learned that if I mess up like that again then its just going to take longer for me to graduate and I’m not going to learn what I’m suppose to learn and I should know more things that have to do with school… I don’t feel like a failure now or anything I just wished that I was more mature and looked at things like how I do now.

  31. What I think about that alarm clock idea is that it would be very helpful. Waking up in the morning on your own isn’t easy especially when it’s your choice to stay in bed or go to school. Not everyone has a parent that wakes them up in the morning and to help motivate you, so something like an alarm clock for everyone in my opinion is something worth doing
