Chipped

Read this story about a student in Texas who is refusing to follow a school policy that has students wear a name badge that contains an electronic tracking chip.

If you are in my afternoon classes (Monday/Wednesday) then you must make a case FOR the school and why wearing the badge is a good thing. If you are in my morning classes (Tue/Th) then you must make a case FOR the student and back up her reasons why it is not a good thing to wear the badges.

Your reply should be at least one FULL paragraph or at least 6-7 sentences in length. Your arguments need to be valid, not "this is stupid" type of comments.

  1. I do believe this is a good idea due to it can help prevent many things or possibly even save a child's life. I do believe that if they do know where you are it can help you in many ways such as if a child is abducted or simply ran away from home. It can also help if the school is being greatly vandalized you can see where this person was at when it occurred. Having this chip could also help if you need to defend yourself in some case then you can just simply tell them to check the chip. Another good thing about the chip is it can help in where you are if you are lost or in urgent need of help somewhere maybe. There are many ways this chip can be helpful but then again it can also not be so helpful.

  2. I think this could be a good thing for the students and the teachers for many of reasons. The first is that is a kid is outside and the students gets taken then they can hear everything and track where they are. Also if two kids happen to get into a fight where there are no cameras or supervision they don't have to worry about who is telling the truth. I believe this can do good for a lot of reasons but those are the main ones.

  3. I think the chipped badges are a good idea for a school that holds their students to a higher degree. In the article, it stated that Andrea attends a science academy, so I don't think it actually offends her religious beliefs. I think that American students don't value their educational opportunities as much as they should. The school district only wants the chips to monitor student activity in school and protect them while they are there. It's wonderful that our generation takes pride in standing up for "the American way" and the freedom to speak out or go against the system, but under privileged kids would do anything to be able to go to a safe school and get a wonderful education. Less than eight hours a day of wearing a name tag is nothing to make a scene about. The real world has regulations that have to be followed. That's just life.

  4. The chip tracker is an excellent idea for school systems. Not only will it make sure students arrive to class on time but also rank up security in our schools. With a school that has limited access of only students and teachers it would be more difficult to have a creeper roaming the halls. Also, without the chip there is no proof of what happens in a school unless they have security cameras. She has to realize that the school is doing this for her safety and to help build up responsibility.

  5. The Chip Tracker is and awesome idea For school systems. It is awesome because it will make sure kids make it to class on time plus if someone gets taken during school hours you can have that chip to tell you where the kids are so you can send a cop or someone to go get them. It is a good idea to have that because if some kid is not wearing that you can tell that kid does not belong at the school and you can send them out if they do not have a reason to be there. I think we need it cause it can keep kids from leaving the building at breaks and also it can keep kids from getting in trouble and so the teachers know where they are at all the time while there on school property.

  6. I think that the school is completly in the wrong to be tracking students like that. That's like getting everyone ready for no privacy because everything will be monitered by the government. I personally don't believe that they have the rights.

  7. I think that is dumb, students are children not animails. Why should we people tracked like were dogs? I think that, that school could have found a way better investment to waste all that money on. I think that if I was here i would take my card home and deactivate it:)

  8. I support Andrea because if she doesn't want to wear it because of her religious beliefs than she shouldn't have to. The school should make her a different identification card that doesn't have the chip in it. So she can feel comfortable. She also wont feel as if her privacy is being invaded. She needs to express why its against her religious beliefs that would help them understand.

  9. I support Andrea. She is right, it is a complete violation of privacy. I understand schools are trying to get their kids to go to school and make sure they stay there. But that is ridiculous. Students should not have to feel like they are being watched and monitored from the moment they step into school, till the time they arrive home. But I can understand why the schools would do that. The drop out rate is very high in most states. Andrea could have just complied with the principle and let them take out the chip. But you should be forced to do something you do not want to do.

  10. I support Andrea because she is right. If it is against her religious beliefs then she should not be suspended for any reason. I also agree with her because i do believe that you should have your own privacy and not have to worry about if someone is spying on you or not. The school should just provide identification cards without the trackers because it would just make it a little bit easier in handling any dilemma or disputes. Andrea should also gather other students in the same situation as her involving the religion aspect of it so she can be better explained and well reasoned with.

  11. I support Andrea, schools already have us doing as were told and reporting everything we can to them. Being under constant surveillance and also being expected to do so without hesitation or complaint is wrong. I know that my school tried to enforce something like this on me I would not be okay with it. I'm old enough to keep myself safe and make smart decisions. Having someone know where I am every second of every single day would bug me to no end. It does not matter if I do something bad or not, I could be the best kid ever it doesn't matter, that gives someone else extra power over me that I don't want to relinquish that power over myself.

  12. I think its good because look at the drop out rate is. With this you could find the students were ever there at. Like if the student had a problem skipping school they could find him bring him back to school or call the police and ask for a pick up order. Like stop looking at all the bad and look and see if your student graduates with or with out it.

  13. I think the school should not have chips on their students because each one of them has different believes. For example, Andrea's believes are different than the rest of the students and that should be respected. The chips should not be required but should be optional. Also, the school should not have stopped her from passing out flyers. She should have a voice and it should be heard. Everyone is different and we should just respect each others decisions.

  14. I support Andrea Hernandez on fighting against the smart school I.D. for religious causes. If it is against her religious why should she wear it, other I.D. cards should be made for her, or students like her. Andrea has all the right, because it is her body and if she doesn't feel comfortable with it they shouldn't force her to wear it. The school should not invade into students privacy, they should just stick to teaching not worrying about the students location. Andrea is doing a good cause for students who feel the same way like she does.

  15. i think that a school that gives there students a tracking chip in there name tag and being forced to wear a name tag in the first place is dumb. if my school made us wear name tags i would drop out as soon as that rule passes.

  16. I think it's wrong because it shows how much schools don't trust their students. Of course there are always negative students who just waste their time in school, but why should the good, hard working students share the same punishment?

  17. I believe that Andrea Hernandez shouldn't have to wear the tracking device if it goes against her privacy or her religion. They should just had an I.D card with her name on it. I don't see why they would need tracking devices if most schools have cameras everywhere. I don't think they should enforce them to wear it, its a waste of money.

  18. I support Andrea, She's right completely. It is violating their privacy, and her beliefs. Tracking them from the time they get to school till the time of getting home. Human's are not dogs they shouldn't have to be tracked. I understand they are in a big state and dropping out rate is low and it will get lower if they are making the student's uncomfortable were they feel like they have no rights or privacy to want to go to school, but those id cards they have to wear around their neck is way too much information. Anybody can steal someone's identity from those. First off they give your name, picture and social security number that's all you need for theft. Students shouldn't have to feel uncomfortable by being monitored just as privacy of going to the bathroom. I understand if someone got kidnapped or something else they would know were they are at, but the government is spending too much money on those they should think of something else to spend their money on. Teacher's in that school should worry about teaching and not worrying about students location on where they are at. Like spending money on computers, books, field trips, or other exciting events and school supplies then monitoring students. If the students don't want to learn or want to be there then don't worry about it they are the one's making that decision. They shouldn't have to be forced to do anything they don't want to. When someone has a big religious belief you shouldn't get in the way of it, She shouldn't have to wear it.

  19. i believe that she shouldn't have to wear it because its an invasion of privacy and its an abuse of authority. I mean if the cops could know were you are at everyday at every second, wouldn't that be uncomfortable?

  20. I honestly agree with the whole id chip card because it make sure they get to class and shows that the student is in the class.I also like the idea of it because you can still use it as a id card for lunch room, and library room. Its also a good idea because you can tell where the kid is if hes not in class and is skipping inside the school with another student or so. I look at is as the more the government funds for this the more the people are getting taxed. Its a good way to see if the students are doing stuff that they shouldnt be doing when they should be in class. Its also good that they have this and they are not charging the students for it they are simply giving it away

  21. I agree with Andrea because it violates her privacy and he beliefs. I don't think people should be forced to wear ID tags that have tracking chips in them. I wouldn't want anyone to watch my every move. I would feel like i was being stalked. I would want my parents to stick with me through it. No matter whether they would take the chip out it would still violate others' privacy.

  22. I support Andraa because I think that is invasion of privacy. If she doesn't want wear it then the school shouldn't force her to as if they were her parents. It is also against her morals.
